Uma Schmidtke

My desire to work with women for women has been an ongoing thought for sometime. When I enrolled back in school to achieve a master in teaching one of my classes required me to volunteer. Upon receiving the list of the organizations that work along with my service learning class, I did not have to look twice to know that the Women’s Community Clinic is where I wanted to be. I hope the experience I learn from the Clinic in the unconditional care they give their clients will make me become a better person, so that when I reach my goal I will be able to be a caring and involved teacher. I believe my volunteering at the Clinic is just the beginning in my involvement in social work in the community that I live.

Uma chose to share this poem about the Clinic that she wrote:
petals drift by slowly
falling
silently onto the floor
scattering before me
within my eyes
becoming whole
warm arms around me
caressing
within my eyes
sister’s whisper softly
you are home.
