Position: Summer Intern

Organization: Women’s Community Clinic

Location: San Francisco, CA

Salary: Small stipend to be determined

Supervisor: Clinic Manager

Schedule: Temporary. Start date June 15th, 2012 (some flexibility around start date, to be negotiated with supervisor). Minimum duration until September 15th; preference given to candidates available to work through October 31st, 2012. Up to 40 hours per week, including evenings and 1-2 Saturdays per month. Position may become a job share between 2 interns, with each intern working approximately 20 hours per week.

Intern Responsibilities include:

Office Coordination Training:

• Hone skills in patient contact and coordination (scheduling appts etc.)
• Learn to how to answer health related questions for clients and how to guide others in doing so

Medical Assistant training/supervision:

• Learn health education skills and techniques
• Learn how to training health educators & how to provide constructive feedback
• Educate patients on health issues
• Advanced training as Pregnancy and or Colpo health educator
• Advanced training running/coordinating in house labs, and conducting rapid HIV testing
• Learn how to supervise clinic flow

• Introduction to Health Education (or, for current Health Educators, further opportunities to learn new health education skills and skills to train others)
• Ability to work closely with and learn from our clinical providers and staff

Examples of past trainings include:

• Advanced topics in birth control methods
• Enhancing counseling skills
• Counseling clients recently diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI)
• Psychological issues in health education
• Current political and legislative issues in health care
• Involvement with a community of committed and enthusiastic women

Preferred Qualifications:

• Current, active Women’s Community Clinic volunteer
• Fluent Spanish speakers strongly preferred
• Interest in community based health care and working in a non-profit environment
• Supervisory/management experience preferred but not required

Job Description:

Women’s Community Clinic recently expanded into a new facility and is expanding its services to the community, which makes this is an incredibly exciting time to join the Clinic’s Development Department. The Clinic uses diverse funding strategies that incorporate collaboration with clients, volunteers, staff, and community members. The Grants Manager will play a vital role in fundraising to support our core services and programs. The Grants Manager is responsible for managing the Clinic’s grants program, grant writing and grant reporting.  The Grants Manager will have the opportunity to increase their understanding of non-profit fundraising operations and strategies and will gain experience in grant writing and grants management.

Job Responsibilities include:

Grant Writing & Management

• Collaborate with program directors to create compelling grant proposals and funding requests;
• Track all upcoming proposal application and reporting deadlines, and interact with relevant program staff to ensure timely report submissions;
• Coordinate with relevant staff in order to solicit timely and appropriate input on grant proposals;
• Review guidelines for all foundation proposals and reports to make sure all submissions are accurately formatted and include all required information, including budgets and materials;
• Submit all applications or direct appropriate staff  to submit, providing all required materials;
• In conjunction with Development Associate, ensure that grants and foundations database is up-to-date and accurate;
• Maintain electronic and hardcopy records of all foundation interactions e.g. grant agreements, report requirements or documentation of calls and meetings;
• Process grant agreements and acknowledge all gifts from foundations on a timely basis;
• Conduct targeted research to identify new institutional funders and help to develop strategies for cultivation and solicitation;
• Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum two years professional experience in nonprofit development field highly preferred
• Experience with proposal writing and grants management
• Demonstrated success in securing institutional gifts
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Strong computer skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and ability to perform mail merges, independently compose donor letters and email communications
• Experience with prospect research for private and institutional giving
• Strong proofreading skills and good attention to detail
• Experience with basic project management and workflow re-design
• Database experience, preferably Salesforce CRM
• Position involves lifting, carrying, and walking up stairs

Job Description

The Staff Clinician at Women’s Community Clinic provides well-woman care and routine gynecologic and family planning services in a nurse managed community health center for a broad range of women of different ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. The clinician also precepts advanced practice nursing students and provides clinical and administrative support to volunteer clinicians in collaboration with the staff clinician team.

This position is open to providers with the qualifications noted below with a preference for a lead clinician who can serve as the point person for communication and decision making for the staff clinician team.

Job Responsibilities include:

Clinical

• Take medical, gynecologic, and contraceptive histories
• Perform routine physical and gynecologic exams
• Perform appropriate medical screening procedures
• Manage frequently occurring mild, acute or chronic uncomplicated gynecologic illnesses
• Manage and follow-up on abnormal lab and exam findings
• Make referrals to other medical specialties where appropriate
• Initiate and manage the use of most approved methods of contraception
• Manage menopausal and peri menopausal clients and associated health concerns
• Identify psychosocial factors affecting health decisions and practices, and provide unbiased patient education and counseling
• Maintain appropriate medical records and documentation
• Furnish and/or dispense drugs and devices in accordance with AB4372 and standardized protocols
• As skills allow, perform gynecological procedures such as vulvar biopsy, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion and colposcopy

Supervisory/Educational

• Provide orientation, training and ongoing support to volunteer clinicians and staff
• Coordinate and provide annual and probationary reviews of volunteer clinicians

• Mentor and evaluate advanced practice nursing students
• Facilitate training and education for lay volunteers

Administrative

• Participate in Program Planning and QI activities for the clinic as part of the Clinical Program Team
• Develop, document and implement appropriate clinical protocols and procedures in conjunction with the Medical Director and Clinic Director
• Assist in writing or updating health education materials
• With help of clinic management staff, ensure that appropriate medical supplies are ordered

Other

• Must be able to work some evenings and Saturdays

Required Qualifications

• Current California NP or CNM license with current furnishing license
• At least 1 year clinical experience as an NP/CNM in a women’s healthcare setting
• Experience working in community-based settings
• Desire to work in a culturally sensitive and client centered setting
• Strong computer skills. Experience working with Health Information Technology, such as EMR/EHR or patient registry

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience precepting or training students
• Experience participating in Quality Improvement activities in a healthcare setting
• Experience working in a “lead clinician” or “clinician champion” role
• Primary Care experience
